Audra McDonald's artistic talent is unparalleled in her range of talents and diversity in her roles as a performer, singer and an actor. Audra McDonald, winner of seven Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was recognized as one of Times magazine's 100 Most Influential people. President Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -the highest honor in America for achievements in this field. With a stunning soprano with an extraordinary talent to tell the truth the actress is just as comfortable on Broadway and the opera scene as she is in her film and television roles. Alongside her theatrical work she has a thriving career as a recording artist who performs regularly at world's foremost venues. A musically inclined family, McDonald was raised living in Fresno California and received her training in classical singing at the New York's Juilliard School. In 1994, a year after her Juilliard School, she won the Tony Award for "Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical" for Carousel. The following four years She was honored with two additional Tony Awards as a featured actress in Terrence Mcnally's Broadway debuts Master Class (1996) and Ragtime (1998) which gave her the total 3 Tony Awards at the age at just 30. The actress won her fourth Tony for her performance in 2004 with Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun and in 2012. In 2012, she received five Tonys, her first award in the category of lead actress for her performance as Porgy and Bess in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess in the title role. In 2014, she created Broadway history by becoming an official Tony Awards most decorated performer with her sixth nomination for her performance in Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill the role that was also used as the basis for her Olivier Award-nominated debut performance in London's West End. In addition to setting a record in the number of Tony Awards an actor has been awarded, she is the first actor to take home every category. McDonald's other theater credits are The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999) Henry IV (2004) 110 in the Shade (2007) Twelfth Night (2009) in which she made the release of her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut film, Shuffle Along or The Making of the Musical Sensation from 1921 along with All That Followed (2016) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2019) and Ohio State Murders (2023). McDonald was introduced to television viewers for her dramatic performance in Peabody Award winning CBS's Having Our Say The Delany Sisters first 100 years. In the following years, she co-starred with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber in the lauded 1999 TV remake from Disney/ABC of Annie and in 2000 she was a frequent guest on NBC's popular series Law & Order Special Victims Unit. Following her debut Emmy nomination for her role in the HBO film version of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit which was directed by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson McDonald returned to the network's television program in 2003 in the drama about politics Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. and featuring Josh Brolin. The actress joined the WB The Bedford Diaries The Bedford Diaries in early in the year. In the following season, she played in a role that was recurring on the NBC Television show Kidnapped. McDonald received a fourth Emmy award in recognition of her performance in HBO's film special of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill in 2016. The Bite is a drama which has six episodes, based on a pandemic, coproduced through Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. The show featured her alongside Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. In 2009, she played U.S. Attorney Liz Lawrence on CBS's legal drama The Good Wife. In the year 2018, McDonald reprised her role as Liz Reddick as a regular on Paramount's The Good Fight. She got three Critics Choice Award nods for this performance. The actress is currently acting as a guest in Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which premieres on HBO.
