Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford started acting in her teens, and was an actor in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a few weeks, she realized it was not for her. Ford later applied for a place for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor would go on to have recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1990. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. The regular theatre work she performed brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies that were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
